Japan has been regarded as one of the world’s premier powder destinations.
Cold Siberian air sweeps across the Sea of Japan picking up moisture and
dumping it on Hokkaido, the north island of Japan. Especially, Niseko,
which is located coastal side of Hokkaido, gets 11 to 15 meters of powdery
snow every winter.
I'd been thinking that skiing abroad was much much better than skiing in
Japan until I skied in Canada, NZ and etc... Since I traveled around other
countries, I realized that we had one of the great spot to ski in the world.
I haven't seen snow in other places as light as the snow Hokkaido has.
And I haven't skied in deep snow as dry as the deep snow Niseko gets.
It truly is the lightest and driest snow in the world.
Aside from the abundance of snow, Niseko is very famous for hot springs
and seafood. If sushi, sashimi, powder and a soak in a natural hot springs
is appealing, then Niseko ski trip is a must for you. |

I'm planning to visit Niseko coming Dec around the 15th, will there be
enough snow during that time? |
Although it depends on seasons, we usually have enough snow to ski around
as far as you ski the runs on ski map. However, if you are advanced skiers
and you want to deep snow in trees, which is the runs not on ski map or
backcountry, it may be too early. We need to wait until we have enough
snow to cover all small bushes.
That period of season is not so busy in Niseko, so I think we can enjoy
good skiing. I enjoy good powder skiing every year before Christmas holidays.

What are "Niseko Local Rules"? |
These rulus are about backcoutry skiing. Niseko area is very easy to go
outside of the resort. And some people ski outbounds without knowing they
are outside of the resort. Some accidents have happend in the past in Niseko
area and some skiers and boarders died in avalance accidents.
That's why Niseko has started to make rules to avoid any accidents.
Niseko has an open gate policy at the top of the resort that allows you
to access vast open fields of untouched powder at your own risk unless
gates are closed due to hazardrous conditions. However, there are permanently
closed area which are called "strictry off limit area". If you
ski in those areas, your pass will be confiscated.
